Hundreds of brand new lap top computers are being wasted by Barnet Council. Last year, the Council spent almost £1.4 million on 1400 new computers. Over a year later, 100 of these are still un-used and in store. Yet the Tory Deputy Council leader has just signed an order to purchase 300 new machines at a cost of over £275,000

Barnet Liberal Democrats are backing proposals to publish all Council expenditure over £500. Cllr Jack Cohen, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group is welcoming plans, which if implemented will give residents access to how the Council spend taxpayers' money. Cllr Cohen believes the Tory Administration has a poor record on transparent transactions and accountability but nevertheless he welcomes their belated attempt to improve.

Barnet Council has paid out £1.79million in compensation to people who have been injured by tripping on pavements in the borough in the past five years. It is ranked the ninth worst local authority in the country according to information the Liberal Democrats obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

The Liberal Democrats are calling for all meetings of Barnet Council to be broadcast live on the internet. Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Cllr Jack Cohen, will put forward a motion at next Tuesday's Full Council Meeting calling on the Council to start videoing meetings.

Leader of Barnet Liberal Democrats Cllr Jack Cohen is wondering if Barnet Council's left hand knows what its right hand is doing. An eagle eyed resident spotted this odd street signage in West Finchley. Cllr Cohen complains this is yet another example of waste of council taxpayers' money. Cllr Cohen wonders how "any one can have faith in a Council that quite frankly doesn't know where it is going"

Barnet Liberal Democrats have called for a ban on street drinking on Cricklewood Broadway and Golders Green Road, but the proposals were blocked by the Conservative Council at the Council meeting on 14 July.

Barnet Liberal Democrats' last ditch effort to save the Sheltered Housing Service floundered this evening (18 June) on the Chairman of the Business Management Overview and Scrutiny sub Committee's casting vote. Cllr Jack Cohen, leader of Barnet Liberal Democrats, had called in the cabinet decision to scrap the Sheltered Housing Warden Service. Cllr Cohen, who had forced Conservative Cabinet Member Richard Cornelius to justify the proposed cuts, said he was bitterly disappointed with the outcome.

Thank you for your support in last week's elections. Across the country, the Lib Dems achieved a record high vote share of 28 per cent and beat Labour into third place. We won almost three times as many council seats as Labour (484 Liberal Democrat councillors to Labour's 178) and added Bristol to the list of major cities run by Liberal Democrats that also includes Cardiff, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield and Edinburgh. In the Euro elections, the Lib Dems gained an MEP, and have representation in every Region in England.

Barnet Tories are behaving like the Labour Government's Political Lap Dogs. The Conservative Administration is proposing to restrict scrutiny of its decisions. Under plans to be voted upon at the Council's Annual meeting this Tuesday, the Conservative Administration intends to force through far reaching changes to the scrutiny procedure.
